So I think there was a case in Belgium where a man committed suicide after conversing with a chatbot who encouraged him to sacrifice himself to save the planet. So, there are risks out there that even if people know they're not conversing with a human, that doesn't necessarily negate all of the risks.

Nearly three-quarters (71%) of millennials and 60% of Gen Zers in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the UK are shopping cross-border several times a year, per a June 2023 report by Worldline. Omnichannel retailers will outperform the market. Ecommerce is growing again, but brick-and-mortar still accounts for the lion’s share of Western Europe retail sales.

Our “other Western Europe” category—which includes the Nordics, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the remaining smaller nations—netted out at -1.5% growth as well. Before this, we had never recorded negative ecommerce growth anywhere. All these markets are expected to return to the positive side of the ledger this year.
