Improving macroeconomic conditions will create new growth opportunities for retailers as inflation decelerates in all major markets, including Argentina and Venezuela. Despite Latin America’s uncertainties, it will be the world’s second-fastest-growing region for retail and ecommerce sales this year, trailing only the Middle East and Africa. Dollarization will boost cross-border trade in Argentina.

No. 3: Dafiti joined the growing list of retailers to exit Argentina. Dafiti announced its departure from Argentina amid worsening economic conditions in the country. The pure-play ecommerce platform, owned by Global Fashion Group (GFG), stated that it would shutter its operations in Argentina on September 18, 2023, after first entering the market more than a decade ago in 2012.

In terms of retail growth, the market trails only the Philippines, Vietnam, Russia, and Argentina. Walmart’s Flipkart and Amazon India will command 31.3% and 30.0% of retail ecommerce sales shares, respectively, followed by Reliance Retail with a 7.2% market share.

For sub OTT, Brazil, Mexico, India, and Argentina will round out the top five for viewer growth in 2024 and in 2025, trailing only Indonesia both years. China will have the most viewers by a huge margin, but India has the most headroom. China’s massive market only benefits its domestic sub OTT platforms.

It lost $880 million in revenue when the Argentinian peso was devalued, and Citibank is unsure if it will continue servicing the country’s debt going forward. Credit loss provisions: JPMorgan and Bank of America upped their loss provisions, but Wells Fargo experienced the worst of such credit losses.

All those countries have much smaller populations than India. By 2024, India will overtake Japan to become the third-largest retail market. Brick-and-mortar still rules India’s retail sector.

By 2027, it will remain the third-fastest-growing retail market in the world, behind only Argentina, which is rebounding from a major decline in retail sales in 2020, and the much smaller Philippines. The vast and complicated market is growing more sophisticated and complex.
