Brazil will remain the largest market for Mercado Libre (“Mercado Livre,” in Portuguese) in Latin America by total online sales volume, despite its slightly slower 18.0% growth rate. It will represent nearly half of Mercado Livre’s regional business this year, or $19.05 billion (BRL 98.35 billion). Mercado Livre will fare better in Brazil than previously expected.

Advertisers in Brazil generated $10.69 per dollar spent on Amazon ads in 2022, far higher than the $7.68 global average, according to client data analyzed by Macarta. So in Brazil, Mercado Libre leads retail media sales by a significant margin. I think it's about two thirds of retail media, of the retail media industry versus Amazon, it's this year about 12%. But in Mexico this year, so 2024 is the first year that Mercado Libre is going to overtake Amazon in Mexico.

At 82.8%, the country leads by nearly 6 percentage points (UAE follows at 76.4%). South Africa spends at least 30 minutes more watching broadcast TV than the rest of the region.

The exceptions are countries with a strong local competitor, like Mercado Libre in Mexico and Brazil. Domestic retailers in smaller markets, like Canada, have been slow to develop ecommerce channels, resulting in Amazon's dominance. Canada’s lag was acute in the past decade, especially versus the US.

The same will occur two years later in Brazil, at which time TV outlays will only be greater than video in three of the 10 markets we track: France, Germany, and Peru. For sub OTT, Brazil, Mexico, India, and Argentina will round out the top five for viewer growth in 2024 and in 2025, trailing only Indonesia both years. China will have the most viewers by a huge margin, but India has the most headroom. China’s massive market only benefits its domestic sub OTT platforms.

In Brazil, for example, there is a bill currently under discussion in Congress that seeks to establish the Brazilian Digital Markets Act. In Japan, meanwhile, legislation is due to Parliament early this year that would allow the Fair Trade Commission in the country to impose fines on digital companies that are keeping users locked in to their digital ecosystems.

Globoplay bucks this trend only in Brazil. The platform was the fourth-most popular service there, with 20.7% of paying subscribers. It came in ahead of YouTube Premium (19.6%) but behind Disney+ (21.7%) and Amazon Prime Video (33.7%). So I think it does depend on each market, but at least when we look at the majority and generally speaking and even looking at some Latin American data, particularly in Brazil, largest market, we do see that podcast listeners do tend to over index and be a bit more affluent in nature.
